Less than a week after The Netherlands started to take action against randomized loot boxes, Belgium has stepped into the ring with an even bigger declaration.
The Belgian Gaming Commission has singled out four games with loot boxes: Overwatch, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, FIFA 18, and Star Wars Battlefront 2. According to the commission, the loot boxes in those games are gambling, and therefore illegal. Loot boxes in those games must be removed, or the creators face a 800,000 euro fine and up to 5 years in prison. Of course, to most of these big companies, that fine is literally a slap on the wrist, but the threat of prison time might make them act.
If this only motivates other countries to crack down on these and other games, who knows. Maybe in a few years we’ll look back on loot boxes and laugh to ourselves that they were ever a thing.
