One of Blizzard’s most recognizable faces, Senior Vice President Chris Metzen, announced today that he would stepping down and retiring at the ripe old age of 42.

The twenty-three-year Blizzard veteran isn’t going anywhere else, or opening his own development studio. Nope, he’s just going to relax and spend time with his family.

Metzen helped to create the worlds used as foundation for both of Blizzard’s free-to-play games, Hearthstone and Hearthstone. Not to mention all of Blizzard’s other not-so-free-to-play titles.

So he’s hanging up his cape, but 42 is a really early age to retire, but the last twenty years have been enormously successful for him. It’ll be interesting to see what kind of high jinx he can get himself into over the next twenty.

You can read his full goodbye message over at the Blizzard forums.
