Rogue-like and MMO. Those are two words I never thought I’d hear together to describe a single video game. But Digital Extremes and Human Head Studios are joining forces to make the dreams we never knew we had a reality. Enter: Survived By.

Of course, Digital Extremes have been super busy lately, too. They’re on the verge of adding an open world element to Warframe. The Amazing Eternals (formerly Keystone) is about to enter closed beta. Human Head Studios are probably still in the process of licking their wounds over Prey 2.

Survived By is billed as a retro rogue-like where up to 100 players fight it out in a veritable bullet hell. Permadeath is just the beginning. Craft weapons, level up, and explore a post-apocalyptic fantasy wasteland. There are several classes to choose from, too, such as geomancer, or alchemist, and of course, the entire thing is pixel art.

In terms of the permadeath mechanics: the game isn’t meant to be super-challenging, but you will die, and you will likely die often. But part of your progress, in the form of a stat boost, will carry on from one character to the next. To alleviate a little of the traditional rogue-like difficulty, Survived By will allow players to survive longer with regenerating health. So that bullet hell will likely be more of a bullet purgatory.

As a free-to-play game, everyone’s always concerned with monetization. Digital Extremes promises that the game will still be fair to those who don’t want to spend a dime. The game will be at PAX West but expect a closed alpha by the end of the year.
